ARTIST STATEMENT
I infuse thick, juicy, layered paint, energetic brush strokes, striking color combinations and graphic cropping in all of my work.
Some of my work reflects the “Instagram Generation” highlighting the fact that social media is here to stay. Select pieces depict the new self-assured image of women and men and the next generation of empowerment.
What I strive for while painting, is to excite. I hope that when the viewer walks away from seeing my paintings that they feel something, anything. Perhaps they will want to create themselves. The viewer may become awakened and realize “this is it.” We only have one life, enjoy it, relish in the turmoil, the achievements, try and take it all in, no need to bypass life with all of its ups and downs. Again, I infuse thick, juicy, layered paint, energetic brush strokes, striking color combinations and graphic cropping so that one can delight in living. Embrace it.
When words don’t seem to convey, I’m compelled to paint. Paintings must come out for me, almost like a sneeze. Rick Rubin said it best in his book The Creative Act, A Way of Being, "As artists, we aim to live in a way in which we see the extraordinary hidden in the seemingly mundane. Then challenge ourselves to share what we see in a way that allows others a glimpse of this remarkable beauty.”
Art tends to be good for everyone involved, whether it stimulates activism for an important cause, is used for art therapy or brings pure entertainment. So, let’s keep at it.
As I mentioned, I’m here to excite. The reason I went to art museums and art exhibits for my entire life is the same reason I go now. To enjoy myself. To delight in the thick, juicy colors placed on a surface. To distract from what often seems like an inhuman world, without sensitivity. To see and feel the raw emotion of the artists’ works. So, why should my work be any different?
There’s nothing profound I am trying to prove, there is no intense story I want to get across. Let’s be thrilled by what we see. A good art exhibit makes you want to grab your friends and family and squeeze em’ tight, makes you want to get a slice of decadent dark chocolate cake with a mocha latte and listen to fun music. Art work does not have to be intellectualized. Painting is a medium that does not use words, it feels its way.
Sometimes when I paint young women, I think about how crazy the Instagram generation is. It’s nuts, the amount of posting and posting one’s self! Therefore, my paintings may poke fun at these totally self-absorbed gals who I’m sure are great in their real lives but can come across as “Hey, this is my world and my great outfit!”
As far as my landscapes and still life go, it’s crazy how gorgeous our surroundings are. And I don’t mean only national state parks, try dirty dishes in a sink, stunning.
